Everything I Know About Designing Apparel That Lets Kids Be Fierce AND Sweet

I have been working on my Fierce & Sweet collection of kids apparel for a while now. What follows is my honest, complete take.
What Most People Get Wrong
Most people think "empowering" kids' apparel just means adding glitter to a dinosaur or printing "girl power" across a pink hoodie. That is not empowerment, that is decoration. The real problem is deeper. In kids' films, predators are overwhelmingly male and prey overwhelmingly female. Kids absorb that pattern early, without anyone meaning to teach it. A shirt cannot undo a whole culture, but it can refuse to reinforce that pattern, and that is a meaningful place to start. It allows kids to choose their animal first, not based on what someone else says is only available to them. Then they can add their favorite color.
What Actually Works
I design around characters and symbols that hold both fierceness and softness in the same image — a tiger standing strong, but looking a little cuddly, an alligator with pointy teeth but kind eyes. My art goes through dozens of variations until the image actually feels like a whole kid, not a stereotype in either direction. Then I test it against one question: would my granddaughter see herself in this, and stand taller because of it?
What Surprises People
Most parents are shocked when I tell them about the predator-prey ratio in children's media. It is not subtle once you know to look for it, and it is not something any single parent chose. It is baked into decades of storytelling. What surprises people even more is how much a small daily object — a shirt, a onesie, a hoodie — can quietly push back against that, simply by giving a kid a different image of herself to wear.
Where to Start If You Are New
Do not try to fix everything at once. Pick one design that shows a kid being both fierce and sweet in the same breath, not one or the other, and give it to the child in your life. Watch what she does with it. That single act of noticing is the real first step, everything else follows from there.
