Gender-Neutral Baby Gifts Grandparents Will Love (and Parents Won’t Return)
Share
Quick answer: The safest gift a grandparent can give a baby or toddler is one that doesn’t make decisions for the parents: a gender-neutral piece in a bright color, one size up, from a shop that makes returns and sizing easy. For Christmas delivery from Fierce & Sweet, order by December 7.
I’m a grandma. I know the feeling. You’re standing in the baby aisle, phone in one hand, trying to remember whether your daughter said “no more pink” or “no more stuff.” Possibly both.
The aisle offers you exactly two answers. Pink with bunnies. Blue with trucks. And somewhere in the back of your mind is a small voice saying, I just want to give this kid something that’s about them.
That little voice is right. Here’s how to listen to it.
What parents actually want from grandparent gifts
After one daughter, one granddaughter and a lot of listening, here’s my short list:
- Something they’ll use. Clothes get worn. Most toys get stepped on.
- Something that respects how they’re raising their kid. If they’ve skipped the boy-and-girl aisles, a gift that drags them back in is a gift that goes in a drawer.
- Something that fits now or soon. Not the size the kid was at the baby shower.
- Nothing that needs a speech. The best gifts explain themselves.
5 gifts that work for any baby or toddler
1. A critter tee in the color the kid would pick. Not the color the aisle would pick. Our infant tees are $20.99 and toddler tees are $23.99. Every critter comes in every color, for every kid. A pink shark? Yes. A black jackrabbit? Also yes.
2. A ready-made holiday box. I put together two gift sets so you don’t have to think too hard:
- Sibling Set ($46): two long-sleeve tees in the same critter, each in its own size, so a big sibling and a little one both get a proper fit.
- Cozy Weather Bestseller ($54): a hoodie plus a matching long-sleeve tee, for the kid who runs cold. Ships free, since orders over $50 do.
Pick Tiger, Buffalo, Wolf, Snake or Jackrabbit in our Holiday Boxes.
3. Matching critters for cousins. Same animal, different sizes. It photographs beautifully at the holiday table, and nobody fights over who got the “boy shirt.”
4. A shirt and a book that go together. A tiger tee plus a picture book about a bold tiger is a gift with a story. Here’s my list of books that don’t tell kids who to be.
5. A gift card, so the kid chooses. Honestly my favorite. Watching a three-year-old pick their own animal is the whole point of this shop. A Fierce & Sweet gift card means no bad guesses.
The grandparent sizing cheat sheet
- Between sizes? Size up. Kids grow faster than gifts get worn.
- Buying for a holiday baby? Think about the season they’ll wear it in. A 6-month-old in December will be a 12-month-old by summer.
- Our hoodies skip 3T. They go 2T, 4T, 5-6T. If your grandkid wears a 3T tee, pick the 4T hoodie.
- Full measurements are on our size guide.
Holiday deadlines (put these on the fridge)
Every Fierce & Sweet piece is printed just for your order. That means no warehouse full of leftovers, but it also means a little lead time: 2–5 business days to print, then 3–7 business days to ship in the continental US.
- Christmas: order by December 7.
- Hanukkah starts the evening of December 4 this year, so order by mid-November to be safe.
- Birthdays: give yourself about three weeks.
Why we don’t sort by gender
A 2025 study of nearly 1,900 animal characters in children’s films found that 85% of predator characters were male. Lions, sharks and wolves get assigned to boys; bunnies and fawns to girls. Real animals don’t work that way, and kids absorb the pattern anyway. I wrote more about it in Hidden Signals.
So at Fierce & Sweet there’s no boys’ section and no girls’ section. Just critters, and kids who get to choose.
FAQ
What’s a good baby gift when parents haven’t shared the baby’s sex?
Anything gender-neutral that the parents would pick themselves: a bold animal print in a color you like, a soft long-sleeve onesie, or a gift card. You’re not guessing, so you can’t guess wrong.
Is gender-neutral clothing only for families who are “making a statement”?
No. Plenty of families just like hand-me-downs that work for the next sibling, or want their kid to wear the dinosaur shirt without a lecture about it. Gender-neutral simply means the clothes don’t decide for you.
What size should I buy for a baby gift?
One size up from their current size, especially for anything they’ll wear in a later season.
Can I ship the gift straight to my grandchild?
Yes. Just enter their address as the shipping address at checkout.
What’s the last day to order for Christmas?
December 7.
