Let Her Be the Shark: Halloween Costumes Without a Boys' Aisle and a Girls' Aisle

Every October I walk past the costume aisle and see the same thing I see on the kids' clothing racks all year. Lions, sharks, and dinosaurs on one side. Bunnies, kittens, and fairies on the other. Nobody hangs a sign that says "boys" or "girls," but everybody knows which side is which.

The Costume Aisle Already Picked for Them

It shows up online too. One toddler costume roundup I read put a lion and a bunny on the same list, but gave its Batgirl pick a special note reminding parents that girls can be superheroes too. It's meant kindly. But notice what it assumes: that a girl being strong is the surprise, the thing you have to point out. edmontonmama

Nobody writes "boys can be bunnies too." Most costume lists just never get there.

Where That Split Comes From

This isn't just me noticing things in stores. A 2025 study in Social Development looked at nearly 1,900 animal characters in children's films and found that 85% of the predator characters were male. The prey animals leaned heavily female. And by age four, kids had already picked up the pattern.

So when a three-year-old girl reaches for the shark costume and an adult says "are you sure you don't want the kitty?", she isn't hearing an opinion. She's hearing the same message she's already heard in every movie.

Let Them Pick the Animal

Here's my one piece of grandma advice for Halloween: let your kid choose, and then don't comment on the choice.

If your daughter wants to be a shark, she's a shark. If your son wants to be a bunny, he's a bunny, and he's a great one. If they want to be a spider that is also very friendly, that works too. Toddlers don't need their costume to match anyone's idea of who they are. They just need it to match what they're excited about that week.

An Easy Costume Your Kid Can Wear Again

Toddler costumes are expensive, itchy, and usually worn for about two hours. A good animal tee or hoodie makes a comfy base, and your kid can keep wearing it in November. A few easy ideas:

  • Shark: Shark tee or hoodie, plus a felt fin stitched or fabric-glued to the back of the hood.
  • Lion: Lion tee, plus a headband with a yarn mane. Our lion collection is called "Roar-alty," so a paper crown works too.
  • Tiger: Tiger tee, orange leggings, and face-paint whiskers. "Purrfectly Fierce," as advertised.
  • Alligator: Alligator tee under a green hoodie, with a row of white felt teeth along the hood. "See ya later!"
  • Spider: Spider tee and black leggings, with four stuffed-sock legs sewn to the back of a dark hoodie. Itsy bitsy, fully fierce.
  • Snake: Snake tee with green or patterned tights. Our "Hugs and Hisses" design already covers both sides of that personality.

New this fall: our Southwest critters

  • Jackrabbit: Jackrabbit tee, plus a headband with tall felt ears and a cotton-ball tail. "Some bunny fierce," and a perfect pick for the little boy who wants to be a bunny.
  • Wolf: Wolf tee under a gray hoodie with felt ears on the hood. "Leader of the pack," whoever is wearing it.
  • Bear: Bear tee under a brown hoodie with round felt ears. "Bear-y fierce," and warm enough for a cold night.
  • Coyote: Coyote tee, tan leggings, and pointy felt ears. Great for a whole-family desert theme.
  • Buffalo: Buffalo tee under a brown hoodie with two small felt horns on the hood. It's the easiest one to make and the one people will ask about.
  • Whiptail lizard: Whiptail lizard tee, plus a long striped tail made from a stuffed sock and stitched to the waistband. "Sun-kissed & sassy."

Two practical grandma notes. Test face paint on a small patch of skin a day ahead. And add a strip of reflective tape to the back of whatever they wear if you're trick-or-treating after dark.

A Costume That Says "You Choose"

Halloween is one of the few days a year when kids get to decide who they are, out loud, in front of the whole neighborhood. That's worth protecting. Whatever animal they pick, let them roar, or hug, or both.
