Look closely at kids' movies and kids' clothes, and you'll notice a pattern: the fierce animals — lions, sharks, wolves — usually end up on boys. The gentle ones — bunnies, fawns, kittens — usually end up on girls.

Here's the thing: that split isn't real. In nature, predator species aren't mostly male, and prey species aren't mostly female. It's a story we tell kids, not a fact about animals.

A 2025 study on children's media found just how deep that story runs — researchers analyzed nearly 1,900 animal characters in kids' films and found predators were overwhelmingly cast as male, prey characters overwhelmingly cast as female, even after accounting for how many more male characters there are overall. And when they tested kids as young as four, the association was already there. Read the study →

We think every kid should get to pick their own animal. Roar if you want to roar. Hug if you want to hug. Both, if that's more you.
